About the Artist
Deanna Pizzitelli (Toronto, 1987) is a Canadian artist based in Bratislava. She studied at Toronto Metropolitan University in Canada (BFA) and the University of Arizona in the United States (MFA).
Working with analogue photographic processes, she explores the elusive nature of affect and the fundamental role that feelings of uncertainty play in our lives. She has held solo exhibitions at SALUT AU MONDE! (PT), Galeria IMAGO Lisboa (PT), and Stephen Bulger Gallery (CA).
Her project Koža, Women & Other Stories was selected as one of ten projects for the Les Rencontres d’Arles: Louis Roederer Discovery Award 2020 (FR). She was also selected for the Jury’s Choice of the Prix Virginia 2020 (FR). As a recipient of the 2018 Scotiabank New Generation Photography Award (CA), she exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada and OCAD U’s Onsite Gallery.
Pizzitelli is represented by Stephen Bulger Gallery in Canada, and her work is in the collections of the Archive of Modern Conflict (UK), Center for Creative Photography (USA), and Archive 192 (CA).

Deanna Pizzitelli is a distinctive figure in contemporary photography whose work crosses the boundaries between documentary, the intimate archive, and the post-photographic object. The project Archive 24 [and the house of printed matter] emerged following a period of creative exhaustion, as a deliberate return to the immediacy of looking and to the physicality of the photographic medium. Pizzitelli abandons the need for a self-contained narrative, instead assembling a fragmentary visual diary composed of situations, gestures, and images poised at the threshold of memory, dreams, and everyday life.
Pizzitelli works with photography not only as image, but also as material. She combines chromogenic prints, traditional photographs, and screen printing, with the different processes disrupting the stability of photographic representation and revealing the image as a layer, trace, or physical object. Motifs of animals, landscapes, intimate portraits, and found situations do not form a linear narrative; instead, they function as emotional resonances in which intimacy and unease meet an inert form of silence.
Her practice operates at the intersection of contemporary expanded photography, print culture, and the personal archive, while retaining a pronounced sensitivity to the vulnerability of both the image and human experience. Archive 24 is a project about looking, memory, and the physical presence of photography in an age of an ever-fragmenting visual reality.
