Peter Valiska Timečko: POLITICUM
Through his light object, Peter Valiska Timečko opens a discussion about conditions in Slovak political realities. It is a discussion of authentic moral values and attitudes in times of a crisis of values. Political issues influence people and thus place political pressure on various topics that shape recipients of “politics”. The light object opens up a visual discussion about whether politicians shape or deform us. Whether they have moral principles or just pretend them. Whether the people of Slovakia can be referred to as “homo politicus” and “homo economicus”, or we still need a longer time development of several generations. All these challenging thoughts are contained in the light object called POLITICUM.
In the work of Peter Valiska Timečko, I see a living tradition of the lasting legacy of Andy Warhol, a living legacy of working with the daily press in any form in which people appear in tabloid news. It is a tradition to react / action-reaction / and to apply the principles of functioning of the tabloid artistic sign – representation in artistic expression.
Since the meaning of the work of art is mostly described by artistic devices applied and material used, it is important to realise that the light in the objects passes through the structure of flytraps, which forms a bright part of graphically contrasted portraits. The graphic sign of the portrait means the division of the graphic form into the light and dark form. The light part of the portrait thus acquires further meanings if we observe that flies and other insects are stuck on the structure of the flytraps. Working with sticky material also includes the idea of the process and gradual gluing of insects.
The POLITICUM light object redefines the discussion of moral misery present in the evaluation of morality and moral competencies. It is a process in which the visual stimulus can support the consolidation of moral attitudes in the viewer and the receptive visitor can complete his self-image.
The result of the perception of the light-graphic object is the viewer’s expanded ability to use critical thinking – critical vision in the sensitive choice of colour and material means of artistic expression.
The Gallery above the Staircase inspires to think about the values and attitudes of “politics”.
